💊 Prescription Medicines and Hormones: The 3-Month Rule

For most prescription drugs (including sedatives, benzodiazepines, and hormone treatments), you can bring them into Australia under the Traveller Exemption Scheme, provided you meet these conditions:

  • Always declare them to the Australian Border Force upon arrival.

  • Keep the medication in its original packaging with the prescription label intact.

  • Carry a doctor’s letter or prescription written in English certifying that the medicine has been prescribed for your treatment.

  • Quantity limit: You must not bring more than a 3-month supply.

⚠️ Important note: Athletes and sporting staff travelling with hormones or peptides must obtain a permit from the Office of Drug Control. Certain substances (such as abortifacients, Yohimbe, or Amygdalin/B17) are excluded from the traveller exemption and require prior written permission.

🤔 Staying in Australia for More Than 3 Months? What Are Your Options?

If your stay extends beyond 3 months, you cannot bring more than a 3-month supply of medication in your luggage upon entry. To continue your medical treatment legally, you have two options:

  1. See a Local Doctor (GP): Travel with your initial 3-month supply alongside a medical report and prescription in English. Once in Australia, book an appointment with a local General Practitioner (GP) to get an Australian prescription so you can buy your medication at a local pharmacy.

  2. Personal Importation Scheme (Mail Supply): You can arrange for medication to be sent to you by mail in shipments of up to 3 months' supply per package (and a maximum of 15 months' supply per year), provided a copy of your prescription is included.

If your exact medication is not registered in Australia (such as Adderall®), a local GP will assess prescribing a suitable local alternative or applying for a special import permit.

⚠️ Vapes and Nicotine: General Ban & Strict Traveller Exemption

In Australia, the commercial sale and general importation of vaping goods are strictly prohibited (vapes are restricted to pharmacy supply and cannot be ordered online or sent via mail). However, a strict traveller exemption applies to international arrivals:

  • Vaping Goods: Travellers may bring limited amounts in their accompanied baggage for personal therapeutic use: a maximum of 2 vapes, 20 accessories (cartridges, capsules, or pods), and 200ml of vape liquid.

  • Nicotine Pouches: Effective 24 July 2026, travellers can no longer bring nicotine pouches into Australia unless specific statutory therapeutic exemptions apply.

Failure to comply with these rules can result in on-the-spot fines, confiscation of goods, or legal prosecution.
